If it had been occupied and they had been asked to join the enemy, they would have joined them without hesitation.

Whoever on that Day turns his back and runs away except as a tactic of war or to join another unit, has incurred the wrath of Allah and his abode is Hell. What an evil abode.
وَمَنْ يُوَلِّهِمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ دُبُرَهُٓ اِلَّا مُتَحَرِّفاً لِقِتَالٍ اَوْ مُتَحَيِّزاً اِلٰى فِئَةٍ فَقَدْ بَٓاءَ بِغَضَبٍ مِنَ اللّٰهِ وَمَأْوٰيهُ جَهَنَّمُۜ وَبِئْسَ الْمَص۪يرُ
